Carlsbad Medical Center’s State of the Hospital
5/19/2017
Carlsbad Medical Center touched more than 173,000 lives over the past year, positively impacting the well-being of Carlsbad and Eddy County and fulfilling its commitment to serve the healthcare needs of the area, according to an update provided by CEO Cathy Hibbs at CMC’s second annual State of the Hospital event held recently. The luncheon was an opportunity to update members of the community on recent improvements at the hospital and to give a preview of what’s in store for 2017.
In 2016, the hospital admitted 2,700 patients and had 142,000 outpatient visits, performed 3,500 surgeries and delivered 400 babies. The emergency department alone received 24,000 patients urgently seeking care.
“Carlsbad and Eddy County can count on Carlsbad Medical Center for the healthcare services they need,” said Cathy Hibbs, CEO. “Our top priority is to provide every patient with quality, personalized care.”
These high standards have been recognized by national accrediting bodies and respected agencies, including the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care, which designated CMC as an accredited Chest Pain Center, adding to the honors earned by the hospital.
Additionally in 2016, patients have more access to care than before through expanded services. Interventional Cardiologist Amanda Ryan, D.O. joined the medical staff, allowing many patients needing advanced cardiac treatment to receive care at CMC’s updated cardiac catheterization lab. Four new family practice providers joined Pecos Valley Physician Group over the past year, and extended hours clinics on either side of town are offering more convenience for families with busy schedules and workers with non-traditional hours.
To support and enhance services, in 2016 Carlsbad Medical Center invested $1.8 million in new equipment, renovations and facilities, including the city’s first urgent care center, Pecos Valley Urgent Care, which opened in January on the National Parks Highway. Offering on-site lab and x-ray services, Pecos Valley Urgent Care is open seven days a week, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.
As Carlsbad Medical Center continuously evaluates how to best respond to patient needs, it also gives back to Carlsbad and Eddy County. In the last year, Carlsbad Medical has provided $11.8 million in charity and uncompensated care to the area’s most in need residents. The hospital also leaves a sizable footprint of $4.7 million in property and business taxes, which in turn fund civic resources and services.
Carlsbad Medical Center also enjoyed working with a number of local non-profit and community organizations over the last year, including the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, Carlsbad Department of Development, Carlsbad Community Foundation, United Way of Carlsbad and South Eddy County, and many more. Additionally, CMC also has active Senior Circle and Healthy Woman programs and has provided numerous free community health screenings.
“All of this is possible through the skills and dedication of our employees, medical staff and volunteers,” said Cathy Hibbs. “We thank them for their unwavering commitment which gives us a strong foundation for continued success.”
