Wound Care Services Available at Carlsbad Medical Center
4/18/2025
Carlsbad Medical Center is pleased to announce the reopening of its outpatient Wound Care Center and the arrival of Wound Care Certified Nurse Practitioner Rochelle McIntire. Nearly 7 million people across the United States suffer from chronic or slow-healing wounds. Wounds fall into two categories: acute and chronic. Acute wounds are related to an accident, injury or surgery. Chronic wounds can also be related to an injury or surgery – but are most often related to a health condition, such as diabetes or vascular disease, that impedes normal healing. If a wound does not heal within a month, and requires medical intervention, it is considered a chronic or slow-healing wound.
Located in the Outpatient Diagnostic Center, which can be found in the front parking lot of the hospital campus, CMC’s Wound Care services include:
- Noninvasive studies
- Debridement (removal of dead/damaged tissue)
- Advanced wound dressings
- Bioengineered tissue (grafts)
- Multi-layer compression wraps for swelling
- Total contact casting (special casts for diabetic foot ulcers)
- Vacuum-assisted closure (procedure to drain a wound, prevent infection and speed healing)
Wounds/skin conditions that can benefit from the Wound Care Center:
- Any wound present for more than four weeks or one that fails to improve with multiple treatments or therapies
- Slow-healing or non-healing surgical wounds
- Neuropathic ulcers (diabetic foot ulcers)
- Mechanical or trauma (skin tears, lesions, toxic drugs)
- Non-healing puncture wounds
- Lower-leg ulcers (venous stasis)
- Radiation and thermal burns
Treatment and therapy for these conditions is provided by McIntire. She earned an associate degree in nursing from New Mexico State University and a bachelor’s degree in applied arts & sciences with a focus on health & human services from Eastern New Mexico University. She then went on to earn her BSN and MSN with a concentration on family nurse practitioner from Walden University. McIntire has over 20 years of nursing experience in a variety of roles, such as perioperative nursing, medical-surgical nursing and private clinical nursing. She is board certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and wound care certified by the National Alliance of Wound Care and Ostomy.
