Total Community Benefit Exceeded $109 Million in 2024
Carlsbad Medical Center provided care to thousands of area residents in 2024, with more than 134,000 patient encounters across its network of physician clinics and other outpatient sites of care. In addition to delivering safe, quality, compassionate healthcare, the health system is helping those in need, supporting charitable organizations and contributing to the area economy. In its most recent Community Benefit Report, Carlsbad Medical Center’s impact in 2024 is estimated to be more than $109 million.
CMC’s emergency room provides lifesaving, medically necessary care at more than 26,000 patient encounters each year, treating all patients regardless of their ability to pay. In 2024, Carlsbad Medical Center provided over $54 million in charity and uncompensated care and provided resources to help patients in need secure medications and medical support devices.
The hospital’s designation as a Level III Trauma Center, along with the availability of high acuity services, has brought patients from across New Mexico, west Texas and beyond, with more than 330 patients transferred to CMC in 2024.
“Our work to grow and enhance the medical services we provide is ongoing, as we continuously improve our safety and quality and support access to healthcare for our local community and the surrounding area,” said Nick Arledge, chief executive officer of Carlsbad Medical Center. “From providing care to our most vulnerable residents to supporting charitable organizations, we are proud to make an impact on the health, well-being and quality of life in Carlsbad and Southeast New Mexico.”
The health system and its employees also support local organizations that make a difference, especially those addressing social determinants of health. Through service projects such as the annual Jars of Love Peanut Butter drive for local food pantries and contributions to charitable organizations such as Carlsbad LifeHouse, the Faith, Hope & Love Foundation and the United Way of Eddy County, Carlsbad Medical Center gives back to the community throughout the year.
To enhance patient care, Carlsbad Medical Center is investing in medical services, facilities and technologies. Capital projects in 2024 totaled $2 million and included renovation of 2nd and 3rd floor patient rooms and a remodeled lobby, kitchen and cafeteria, along with the addition of a new, additional CT scanner. The hospital also took steps to enhance access to healthcare with the addition of several primary care providers and specialists and the reopening of a pediatric clinic to meet the growing needs of the community.
“We are strategically applying our resources to help area residents have access to the care they need close to home,” said Arledge. “These investments, along with our outstanding medical staff and employees, support our delivery of high quality medical care and services for a positive patient experience.”
Carlsbad Medical Center is one of the community’s larger employers with a payroll of $43.7 million. The health system’s support for the future healthcare workforce includes training the next generation of medical professionals. The strong relationship with the Permian Strategic Partnership and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center is helping bring Family Practice Physicians to Carlsbad to complete their residencies while filling the need for more primary care providers in the community.
In addition to supporting the local economy through job creation, Carlsbad Medical Center paid $4 million in taxes in 2024, monies that support local infrastructure and civic resources.
