Bone Densitometry/DEXA
Osteoporosis means, literally, "porous bones," and is a debilitating disease that can lead to bone fracture. More than 52 million Americans have low bone density and are at risk for osteoporosis— 80% are women. Bone densitometry, or DEXA (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry), measures the strength of your bones to determine whether you are at risk for developing osteoporosis or osteopenia (decreased bone mass) — osteopenia often develops into osteoporosis.
Doctors use the test to develop an appropriate treatment plan to slow the progression of disease and prevent fractures. Early detection can allow doctors to begin therapy when it can be most beneficial. The National Osteoporosis Foundation’s recommendation that women over 65 should get a DEXA scan every two years to diagnose bone density loss and hopefully prevent osteoporosis.
