Physical Therapy
After injury or illness, physical therapy helps patients get back to work, play and their lives. Experienced physical therapists at Carlsbad Medical Center work with doctors and nurses to create programs that improve movement, balance, endurance and strength for patients, helping them move — onward, upward and forward.
What is Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy helps preserve, develop and restore physical function. It can help restore physical health that has been lost due to injury, disease, age or other causes.
Physical therapy may include treatment for pain, muscle spasms, range of motion, strength, posture, balance and endurance.
Treatment may include:
- BTE: specialized machine that mimics everyday work and leisure tasks for improved performance.
- WorkSteps: specific job testing for pre-employment testing and post-employment return to work after injury.
- Work hardening: therapy to improve strength and endurance for return to work after an injury.
- Sports medicine: returning to play after injuries, education of exercise programs to prevent further injuries.
- Post-surgical joint replacement therapy: improving strength and function after hip or knee surgery.
- Neurological therapy for stroke, Parkinson's disease, vestibular/balance issues, Bell's Palsy: work with patient on return to function, safety and improved mobility.
- Pain management: post-surgical therapy after back surgery, chronic pain relief using various modalities as well as strengthening education for continued pain control.
- Pediatric disorders/developmental delays: educate child and parents on tasks that allow child to be as independent as possible in their life skills.
Based on a patient’s needs, specific goals are set for each individual. Some typical goals might be to improve range of motion of a joint, to increase strength in a muscle or to improve the ability to walk.
Because we emphasize active participation and responsibility, we provide you with the information to self-manage your condition between appointments and teach you how to live a healthier lifestyle.
The Individualized Treatment Process
Therapy services require a referral or a prescription from a medical practitioner such as a doctor, podiatrist or dentist. Insurance carriers may require authorization prior to beginning treatment.
At the first visit, a licensed therapist will perform a patient evaluation. Assessments of pain, ability and function will be conducted for all affected areas. Every patient is unique, therefore each treatment program is tailored to fit individual needs and abilities identified during the evaluation.
Why Therapy?
Therapy helps relieve the symptoms and pain associated with joint replacement, injury, stroke and many other conditions that may impair abilities. The goal is to maximize functional abilities, restore independence and return patients to normal activity as safely and quickly as possible.
Our program offers:
- Confidence to return to daily activities
- Education for living a healthier lifestyle
- Motivation and encouragement
- Progress along the road to recovery
The Staff
Patients receive one-on-one care from the physical therapy team, a group of licensed therapists and therapy assistants – some with almost two decades of therapy experience.
In most cases, the same therapist provides a patient’s care for the duration of treatment. This provides for continuity of care for the patient and improved communication with the referring physician.
